Is the New Rosalía Instagram Font a Win or a Wreck?
3 minute read
Just because it’s new, doesn’t mean you should use it, or should you?
By this point, I’d be surprised if you haven’t seen the new font on Instagram. It’s a font specifically made in partnership with Rosalía, a Spanish pop icon. Using a celebrity endorsement, is a unique way for Instagram to connect with their audience and show their relevancy in the competitive social media world.
There are certainly some features that make it stand out.
The font actually mirrors the handwriting of Rosalía, leaning towards an artistic flair, but also low key giving me hidden Papyrus vibes. I guess all trends come back around, but please, no, I’m not ready for Papyrus font.
There are hidden emojis within the font, when you type certain combination of letters. <3 is going to give you a heart, ** gives you a star, you can also make combinations for a smiley face, a devil face, and a cross. Only true Rosalía fans will understand the significance of those five hidden emojis. But, these offer another way to engage people in their Instagram experience, providing them more ownership in their content.
So, what are people saying? Some people love it. Some people hate it. And honestly, most people still have no idea the font means anything, including even knowing who Rosalía is; they just think it is a trendy new font.
I tend to agree with @fabglance’s and HER TAKE. It is too hard to read for most people. It’s only meant for headings, do NOT write paragraphs with the Rosalía font.
The collab between Instagram and Rosalía created significant exposure for both parties. It likely secured a bit of a new audience for Instagram, and introduced Rosalía’s music and brand to millions who didn’t know who she was before.
So, I’d consider it successful. I don’t think it is here to stick around forever, but I won’t be surprised to see more collabs presented in a similar vein.
I really have no plans to use Rosalía on my personal account, and brands will (should) stick with their brand fonts, but there are many users that are trying it out and love the artsy look. It’s not for me, but maybe I’ll love the next collab font…if there is one.
